Film making is often an exercise in excuse making. How many film makers center their lives around a perpetually unfinished film? Too many. The big payoff to fast filmmaking contests is that it gives people an excuse to actually finish a film.
Over-reaching can be a procrastination technique. Since the project will never be perfect, the lack of perfection can delay completion forever.
In fast film contests, overreaching often leads to incompletions or late films. Small stories are just as satisfying as big ones and much more achieveable. The imperfect film that you actually make is better than the perfect film that you don't make.
